Critical parameters governing the mobility and fate of pesticides in the soil/aquifer system: an experimental and modelling study based on coherent interpretation of transport parameters and physico-chemical characteristics measured at mult

Objetivo

To determine and quantify the key parameters governing the vertical and lateral flux of selected organic agrochemicals in the vadose and aquifer system and to model the effect of these parameters on the transport of these compounds at laboratory, lysimeter, field and regional scale.

The project consists of experimental research and modelling at process and system level.

1. Process level: Experimental studies in saturated and unsaturated small columns will concentrate on the reactivity of the solid/solution phase. Dissolved pollutant concentration, dissolved organic compounds, pH and flow rate are variables in these experiments which will be completed by standard batch experiments. The K-0-h relationship, the local dispersivity and the transport volume will be measured in the vadose zone and the transport of 14C labelled pesticide will be compared to chloride and D2O transport in lysimeters.

2. System level: These studies, using a suitable pesticide tracer, will concentrate on a 1 ha field site near KFA Jülich to be equipped with 25 Multi Level Samplers in the unconfined aquifer down to 15-20 m depth. They will be complemented by short-term tracer experiments in the vadose zone using chloride/bromide and a pesticide.

3. Modelling: Modelling at process level will concentrate on the physico-chemical processes determining the mobility and transformation of compounds. At system level, modelling will encompass all aspects, from the scaling up of critical parameters determined at process level to the development of a geographic information system necessary for the use of distributed, stochastic-mechanistic models at the field and regional scale.
