Objective
To assess seismic vulnerability of existing European hospitals.
To establish the criteria and methods for their rehabilitation,
their retrofitting and for the design of new ones.
The following tasks are foreseen for the research:
Typical damage evaluation based on past earthquakes evaluation of
essential activities after an earthquake and consequences of
damage on first aid organisation. This task will be essentially
based on Italian, Greek and Portuguese earthquakes for Europe and
extra specific data will be obtained from America, Iran and
Philippines.
Evaluation of the fragility and vulnerability of existing
hospitals and methods for their reduction (based on real case
study hospitals for the different European countries). Possible
strategies for retrofitting and rehabilitation of existing
hospitals.
Evaluation of the vulnerability of the regional hospital system
(based on real case study regional systems). This task will be
based on two cases: a regional system in a moderate seismic risk
area (Southern France) and a regional system in central Italy.
A Guide will be obtained with recommendations concerning criteria
for seismic design and retrofitting of hospitals for earthquakes.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
