Objective The Conference ESREL is the most important European event in the field of technological, industrial and environmental safety. It involves the maximum European experts in safety related fields, both in scientific organisation as well as Conference speakers. ESREL 2001 is organised under the auspices of ESRA, the European Safety and Reliability Association. The purpose of the Conference is to present and discuss innovative as well as traditional methods and applications for improving the design and operation of products, processes, equipment and installations from a safety and environmental point of view. Within ESREL2001 theorists as technicians from industry can propose both innovative methodological developments as well as practical applications to a large audience of scientists coming from different European (and developing) countries as well as from different work experiences, with a profitable exchange of ideas.
