Targeting optimal use of gps humidity measurements in meteorology

Objective

Measurements of the atmospheric delays of radio signals from navigation system satellites, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), offer an opportunity for European weather prediction agencies to get access to high quality atmospheric moisture information from existing networks of GPS ground stations. Considerable progress has been made already, e.g. in the framework of the EU COST Action 716 and in the EU MAGIC project. The quality of the GPS delay data has steadily been improved, the extraction techniques can now work in near real time. However, further research is needed before the GPS data can be used in an optimal way to the benefit of numerical weather prediction and the European public. Based on these promising results 15 institutes, half of which are meteorological, join forces in this project in order to optimise the methods by which GPS data can be utilised in NWP models.
