Objective
PRIMROSE will develop user-friendly tools for the design of cold climate constructed wetlands (CW). The CW will treat wastewater from small communities typical in boreal and sub-alpine regions of Europe. These areas are characterized by clean freshwater resources, and wastewater loading forms a risk to their quality. Critical conditions for wetland performance (hydraulics and processes) will be studied and process-based models for efficient design of wetlands in boreal environments will be developed. Reliable methods for constructed wetland operation, maintenance and safe re-use of the saturated sorbing media will be investigated. Total watershed approach will be achieved by integrating GIS- wastewater applications. Applicability of the tools will be tested in PILOT sub- basins with end users. The project will result in a handbook and lecture material.
