The project aims:
1. to evaluate and assess the physical, chemical and meteorological processes responsible for the spatial and temporal variability of photochemical pollutants and fine particles in sub grid and their effect on their long-range transport characteristics.
2. to obtain and provide to the scientific and policy-maker community in Europe a critical database on the vertical and horizontal distribution of ozone and fine particles.
3. to evaluate methods available in assessing the effects of turbulent mixing on physico-chemical transformations.
4. to develop (or refine as necessary) and test new chemistry modules including secondary aerosol formation and air quality models based on findings from the present field studies. The results of the current research effort provide governments with the basis for decision making-policy and input to the international debate concerning global change and environmental pollution.
Scientific objectives and approach
Objective of the proposed research project is the understanding of the formation, accumulation, fate, and effects of ozone (O3), other photochemical oxidants and fine particulate matter in sub grid ("local") scale in the Mediterranean area. The policy-relevant finding of the present proposal is the development of scientifically robust methods for evaluating possible control strategies for mitigation of the effects of ozone/fine particles in the Mediterranean area and in Europe as a whole. This is accomplished by incorporating state-of-the-art field measurements combined with state-of-the-art analysis/mesoscale-subgrid scale modelling tools that improve our ability to quantify the relationships between emission source activity and ambient air quality for photochemical pollutants and fine particles. The research project is composed from an intensive field measurement program in the Mediterranean area, analysis of the field measurements and a combination of sub grid and mesoscale modelling.
Expected Impacts
The information to be provided by the field campaigns in the project leads to an improvement in the model and assessment systems upon which the EU air quality legislation is based, as well as the Convention on Long-Range Transport of Air Pollutants (through EEA and EMEP). In this way the quality is improved of the underlying science in the legislation which regulates emissions and concentration levels a range of air pollutants and their precursors. The project contributes therefore to the improvement in the quality of health and life/ecosystems. The coupled transport-chemistry models for the atmosphere that are to be further validated in this project, improves the prognostic capability, implying that pollution levels can be better forecasted and the population allowed to take its precautions, or measures can be implemented to avoid the pollution episode.
