Objective Modelling predictions of the climate system's response to anthropogenic forcings are severely inhibited by inadequate understanding of natural climate variability. HOLSMEER proposes to improve our understanding of this natural variability through the search for, interpretation, and quantification of, climatic variability in high-resolution shallow marine records from Atlantic Europe covering the last 2000 years. Long-term instrumental time series of marine and atmospheric parameters will be used in a new way to calibrate the marine palaeoclimate observations, extending the marine record to the period before systematic recording of environmental parameters was undertaken, and therefore providing a basis for establishing the natural variability of the oceanic component of the climate system in the critical North Atlantic region prior to significant anthropogenic forcing of the environment. These data will validate numerical models of the climate system.
