Objective In the proposed project, special focus will be placed on gaining information that can improve, test and validate ocean general circulation models for the North Atlantic Current system, the North Atlantic sub-polar gyre, the Nordic Seas, and the Eurasian part of the Arctic Basin. In the next years we have a unique opportunity to do this by utilising the deliberate release of SF6 tracer to the convective gyre of the Greenland Sea in 1996. A large portion of the tracer still resides in the gyre and some is at the time of writing in transit to the other ocean basins (Norwegian Sea, Arctic Ocean and North Atlantic). Since we know the initial conditions, we have the possibility to quantify a number of important parameters and test these model results by direct comparisons with these unique observations.
