Objective
For many EU countries, climatic change from whatever cause is most evident, part-circularly to the public & media, through changing frequencies of extremes. While there is a clear need for scenarios of extremes, such scenarios are not readily available at present, mainly because a systematic framework for identifying & evaluating suitable construction methods is lacking. STARDEX will provide such a framework through the rigorous & systematic inter-comparison & evaluation of statistical, dynamical & statistical-dynamical downscaling methods for the recon-striation of observed extremes & the construction of scenarios of extremes for European case-study regions. The more robust techniques will be identified & used to produce reliable & plausible future scenarios of extremes for the case- study regions for the end of the 21st century. These scenarios will help to address the vital question as to whether extremes will occur more frequently in the future.
