Objective
Secondary troposphere aerosols are often aqueous mixtures of inorganic salts and organic components. In the CASOMIO project we will investigate the importance of oxidized hydrocarbons in such mixed aerosols for new particle formation and particle growth and for the surface reactions of nitrogen oxides. This will be achieved by combining kinetic flow tube measurements, studies in large aerosol chamber with on-line composition analysis of the particulate phase and thermodynamic and theoretical modelling. We will determine the role organic coatings and large organic solute fractions for heterogeneous NOX removal from the troposphere. By aerosol dynamic model calculations the atmospheric significance of organic vapours for the formation of secondary aerosols will be investigated.
