Objective
The overall aim of the project is to move forward the application of hierarchy and systems theory in landscape monitoring. The basis for this development will be an analysis of remotely sensed image segmentation techniques used for a wide set of problems in landscape ecological management. The phenomena of interest in landscape ecological management are natural landscape units, vegetation cover patterns, plant distributions, animal distributions and human occupancy. The project will compare innovative state-of-the-art image segmentation/classification methods for deriving ecologic "objects" and integrating them into GIS-based decision support tools. Drawing on the theory of hierarchical patch dynamics, multi-scale image segmentation/classification techniques will be programmed and tested on images of forested and agricultural landscapes. The research has a two-phase structure. In the first phase, the operationalization of a multi-scale and hierarchical method will be demonstrated. In the second phase, the testing of the method for a larger variety of phenomena (sensitivity analysis and re-parameterizing) will be conducted, enabling the generation of more general rubies of object- based classification and GIS analysis. The results will be relevant to a variety of European landscape monitoring programs. The training content is provided by the collaborative analysis framework, drawing expertise from Universities of Salzburg and Vienna, and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (METLA).
