Due to the quality of its research, broad international contacts and favourable location, the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) may play an important role in the process of upgrading the standards of environmental protection in Central Europe. The main goal of the project is to bring together theoretical and applied science at the IES. This will ensure high-quality, multidisciplinary research, focused on combining ecological theory, modem techniques and environmental praxis into scientific basis for better understanding of ecosystem processes as well as for assessing and conserving biodiversity. Co-operation with non-profit environmental organisations, national parks and local governments will, in turn, help to implement scientific achievements into practice. The goal will be reached through inviting leading scientists and practitioners to the Institute, training research staff, organising workshops and research networks.
