Objective
The effects of marine oil spills can be far reaching, posing both an environmental and economic threat. Marine life, fisheries, local industry and recreational activities and are among the resources that can be adversely affected by oil spills. This project is proposed to develop a system for cleaning oil spills based upon the oil absorbing characteristics of prevulcanised latex rubber. When especially treated, prevulcanised latex is a powerful absorbent, capable of absorbing up to 20 times its own volume, while at the same time it does not absorb water. The issues to investigate include optimising the prevulcanised latex, research and development of a cleaning system, as well as laboratory and field evaluations.
