Objective
The aim is a network of sea floor observatories around the European Ocean Margin from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea for strategic long term monitoring as part of a GMES with capability in geophysics, geotechnics, chemistry, biochemistry oceanography, biology and fisheries. Long-term data collection & alarm capability in the event of hazards (eg earthquakes) will be considered. An Atlas of European Margin assets & hazards, model products from existing observatories & a list of potential participants will be produced as a basis for forward planning. Data requirements will be reviewed together with existing capability. Future observatory designs and data management networks including data acquisition, via telemetry, scientific cables and oil industry cables will be considered in a series of workshops. The project outcome will be costed proposals for phased implementation of a sea floor GMES system in key regions around Europe.
