Objective
The objective of the project is to develop structural systems in which roundwood can be used and hereby create new market for small diameter round timber.
This material is obtained in large quantities in thinning, and is of low commercial value because in European countries the area of forest land has increased during the past ten years. Small round timber is an environmentally friendly building material.
The key elements of the production chain which need development before the structural use of small roundwood can be promoted, and which will be dealt with in this project are :
- methods for harvesting, selection, debarking and drying;
- determination of design values (strength etc...) and development of grading rules for
small round wood;
- development of innovative structural systems and design guidelines for structural
members and joints for such types of buildings which are competitive on building
market.
The research project is divided into two main tasks concerning material production and research, and development of structures.
