Objective
The principle objective of the project is to facilitate the increased use of wood-based panels in applications where they are intended to carry shear forces, by developing a better understanding of shear test methods and properties and how these relate to the behaviour of components and structures.
The existing tests for determining the shear properties of panels to be used in structural design are provisional in nature and are included in EN789 as informative annexes because of the uncertainty concerning their use. This uncertainty needs urgently to be addressed.
This project is concerned with support for the implementation of the Construction Products Directive, especially in relation to structural stability and safety. It will also assist with the implementation of the harmonised European standards for wood-based panels & timber structures. Sub-objectives which will be addressed include : 1. To develop an understanding of the EN789 test method for Panel Shear and its interrelationship with panel structure and properties. 2. To develop and validate a test method for Panel Shear meeting specific criteria. 3. To develop an understanding of the EN789 test method for Planar Shear and its interrelationship with panel structure and properties. 4. To develop and validate a test method for Planar Shear meeting specific criteria. 5. To consider the potential application of the more reliable Panel and Planar Shear values in structural use and to identify ways of exploiting this potential. This will involve safer and more efficient use of panels in existing structure types and possibilities for new forms of structure and component which are not currently practical or economic. Achievements of these objectives will facilitate the integration of the raw material to the market chain by demonstrating the interrelationship between manufacturing parameters / methods and performances in service and will open up new markets for wood-based panels. It will also ensure more efficient utilisation and encourage increased use of the renewable resource.
The partners, being involved in relevant CEN Committees, will ensure that the work is
relevant to the industry at the European level. The main flow of the project involves the following stages :
1. Study of the history/development of shear testing of panels.
2. Development of an understanding of shear behaviour by
mathematical modelling.
3. Sampling of suitable materials for testing.
4. Development of new test methods for panel and planar shear.
5. Verification of shear behaviour by component testing.
6. Production of design guidance to facilitate the exploitation
of the shear carrying potential of wood-based panels.
