EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR THE IMPROVEMENT AND EVALUATION OF ROOTSTOCKS AND INTERSTOCKS USED FOR POME AND STONE FRUITS

Objective

The aims of the Concerted Action are to co-ordinate the breeding, evaluation and physiological studies of pome and stone fruit rootstocks/interstocks which are already taking place in Europe. This should achieve economies of scale, identify any gaps and avoid wasteful research efforts. Moreover, through detailed and integrated studies of rootstock/interstock effects on tree growth and cropping conducted on sites with a wide range of evironmental conditions, a better understanding of the often complicated interactions between rootstock and environmental (edaphic/climatic) effects should be gained.
The Action proposed includes: - holding meetings among the participants an a yearly basis, to coordinate existing rootstock/interstock trials and establish, on a European - wide basis, new coordinated trials, to coordinate current research on rootstock mechanisms, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of how rootstocks affect scion growth and cropping, and to explain and coordinate to the benefit of the Community the use of new, in vitra and other novel propagation techniques for rootstocks.
- the production of a Rootstock Newsletter to facilitate efficient and effective data exchange amongst the research centres involved.
- to set up user-friendly and easily accessible computer data bases on pome and stone fruit rootstocks.
- to share facilities and techniques and to exchange of research materials.
The Action contributes,to the objectives of the program by:
a) improving fruit quality through the use of appropriate rootstocks,
b) by improving the economic viability of production by reductions in productio costs and better control of inputs,
c) by the increase in efficiency in horticulture, and economically sustainable development should be achieved,
d) Better protection of the environment shou be thorough, by improving the targeting of pesticides and the removal of the dependence upon applications of growth regulating chemicals because of the reduction of tree size obtained by an appropriate use of rootstock/interstoc
The participants from the SME would be of great value in learning the points of view the industry.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
