Objective
This Concerted Action contributes to the Objectives addressed by concertation(area 6) by coordinating research in area 4 (Agriculture, forestry and rural development) of the programme. It concerns mainly the topic areas "Plant health" (441) and 'Agriculture-environment interactions' (412), although the research is also related to areas 432 (Biomass production) and 453 (Forest conservation and protection).
The proposal involves 8 research groups from 5 EU-member countries. The general objectives are: A. Coordination of European research on verticillium wilt in tree species B. Developing innovative and environmentally sound control strategies C. Preparation of a compendium on verticillium wilt in tree species D. Compiling a proposal for shared cost research.
The structural philosophy of the project is to bring together the eight participatin groups, currently working on several aspects of Verticillium Wilt in different member countries, aiming at interchanging ideas and scientific knowledge, standardization of methods and promoting future cooperation on the basis of a SC project. During the three meetings which have been planned within a 2-year period a Compendium on Verticillium Wilt in trees and also a RTD-proposal will be prepared.
The research activities, that will be coordinated, include three main research areas
1. Identification of resistant germplasm
2. Improving pre-planting risk assessment procedures
3. Epidemiological aspects related to biological control.
Within these three research areas twelve research tasks have been identified. Integration of the results from the three research areas with present information will prepare the basis for developing innovative and environmentally sound control strategies.
