MEAT AUTOMATED CONCERTED ACTION

Objective



The benefits of process automation are acknowledged in industries with consistent components. Many experts believe similar advantages can be gained in the meat and fish processing sector.

The main of Meat Automation concerted action (MACA) is to capitalise on combined European expertise by bringing together key parties in development of automation for meat production. The strong partnership includes : meat producers to provide a background of production requirements, equipment manufacturers having a detailed knowledge of appropriate engineering solutions and established technology, and research organisations supplying expertise in meat research, new automation technologies and the R&D skills to bridge the knowledge gap. The concerted action will provide the forum for direct interaction between these groups, allowing dissemination of relevant information, generation of new business relationships, and rapid identification of opportunities. MACA will be administered by the Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Research Centre (AMARC) based at the University of Bristol, UK. AMARC has considerable expertise in developing automation for the meat sector and in co-ordinating EU funded programmes.

The concerted action will achieve the aims of increasing the rate of development and implementation of automated systems in the European meat sector through a series of focused technical meetings and publications. At the first full project meeting each participants will be encouraged to give a short non-confidential presentation on the specific interests of their organisation. This data will be used to focus attention towards key technical areas for meat automation equipment. Technical area groups will be formed concentrating on the key aspects will be identified by the meat producer partners. The specific applications will involve some or all of the technical areas identifying technology transfer opportunities. Periodic meetings will be held for technical groups to combine and discuss developments in their field. A mobility scheme will be available to permit individuals to visit other partners to pass on expertise and learn new techniques.

Newsletters, meeting proceedings and press releases will be used to disseminate conclusions and new developments to the industry. In addition, partners such as ECCEAMST and TEAGASC (co-ordinators of FLAIR-FLOW) will disseminate data across their extensive contact networks.
