Antibiotic resistance in bacteria from animals-concerted action

Objective

1.1 - The objective of this proposal is to build an european scientific network for study in animals of antibiotic resistance for zoonotic bacteria (i.e. Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Enterococcus, ...). This scientific network will be created to provide the basis of a monitoring network of antibiotic resistance at a european level and to discuss and define new scientific approaches for a better evaluation of lhe risks linked to the use of antibiotics in animals. This european network for study in animals of antibiotic resistance for zoonotic bacteria will be connected with a similar network in human medicine. 1.2 - Compliance of the proposal objectives with objectivcs of the whole program 1.2.1 - European network to monitor antibiotic resistance in zoonotic bacteria In order to build an european network to monitor antibiotic resistance in zoonotic bacteria, it was necessary to know the existing national networks and their working methods. Monitoring of antibiotic resistance could be obtained by two major ways:
(l) Coordination of a laboratory network, in which each laboratory transfers information on minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for each isolated strain and sends each new resistant strain to a central laboratory. MICs are determined by standardized methods and a central laboratory organizes regulary inter-laboratory studies with a reference strain. The central laboratory verifies the resistance of the strain and identifies each new resistant mechanism with the help of a research laboratory. The central laboratory has also the capacity to organize an epidemiological study when a new resistance mechanism appears'
(2) An epidemiologic study is organized by a laboratory which collects strains of a bacterial species isolated at specified period time (eg. l year) and determines the MIC profile with a standardized method. Results obtained are compared over time periods2. In these two schemas of monitoring, the strains can be collected from diseased animals for a diagnostic analysis (ante or post-mortem), from healthy animals during field studies, from healthy human beings, from meat and from the environment. Mechanism of resistant strains and genomic support (plasmidic, chromosomic) were studied in strain by specialized laboratories3-4.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
