Objective
It is known that exists a strong asymmetry between supply and demand of innovation in South Europe besldes the fact that the acceptance of new technologies take longer than in other Europe Regions. Many obstacles of different origin slow down the diffusion of technical progresses. The main objectives of this proposal are:
1. To investigate the several factors (endogenous and exogenous ) which influence the innovation diffusion and possibly to evaluate their relative weig on the speed of technology transfer in the Agro-industrial system of 4 Mediterranean countries (Italy, France, Greece, Spain ) and one Northern Europe country (United Kingdom) as a term of reference;
2. To make a comparative analysis on the innovation diffusion in Agro-industrial systems (farms, food processing ffrms and agriculture co-operative) in 4 countries and UK;
3. To point out the role influence and weight public (agriculture extension services) and private agencies (commercial channels), and other media in the diffusion of new techniques;
4. To provide suitable scientific and technical indicator to the community which enable to improve existing policies in agriculture and rural development;
5. To create an information system on CD ROM to observe the technology transfer in 12 areas in the moment when it happens. Therefore the main research activities are focused on the socio-economic analyses of the diffusion of a number of selected innovations (product/process) which are considered of particular significance for the European agriculture (e.g. New varieties, integrated pest management, localised and automatised irrigation, harvest mechanisation, new processing technologies, marketing strategies, etc.).
These socio-economical analyses will be carried out by a team group in each of the 5 participant countries (Italy, France, Greece, Spain, and United Kingdom). The analyses will be performed separately in farms, processing firms and co-operatives and in each country two selected representative areas will be chosen( total 10 areas). The research work will be undertaken by an multidisciplinary team composed of economists, sociologists, agronomists, statisticians, mathematicians with an integrate approach involving also farm associations and private companies. The specific research work will consists: WPA. Review and systematisation of literature of different disciplines on innovation diffusion in the Agro-industrial system; WPB. Investigation on the diffusion process in 10 representative areas; WPC. Evaluation of the results and preparation of 14 monographs and one general report.
