Treatment, disposal and possible reuse of suspended solids in the effluent of intensive land based fish farms

Objective

Well standardised intensive land based fish farming is an increasing source of pollution due to dejections and uneaten food.

The aim of the project is to find out a technical, economical and environmentally friendly solution to this problem either for fresh and seawater, studying and defining applicable techniques for the different aspects of the new technologies to be employed:
.effluent filtration
.thickening of organic matter
.characterisation of the waste
.stocking solutions
.identification of the possible reuse.

Since, at the moment, very few farms have adopted a treatment system for their effluents before discharging the water into the environment, the solutions eventually found will give a mean to the farmers to treat their effluents and dispose or reuse their wastes and will be also of sound importance for the public concern.

The study will be performed into two representative fish farms: one intensive fresh water trout farm "Pisciculture de Gaume" and one intensive sea water bass and bream farm "Ittica Ugento".

This proposal has been prepared with the help of an Exploratory Award.
