Use of Frozen milt of Rainbow Trout to Compare Males from Different Populations

Objective

The research approach and technical programme of this project is based on the experience of the genetic evaluation programmes of dairy bulls by using artificial insemination technology with doses of frozen semen. Similarly we propose, in this project, an international progeny test programme for a group of rainbow trout males from which sperm will be collected and frozen in straws.

The major advantages for the participating SMEs will be:
- available tested protocol for on farm use of frozen sperm;
- estimates of genetic values for their own group of sires compared to the sires from the other SMEs;
- available frozen sperm doses with corresponding genetic values.

The following breeding scheme will be used to get progeny groups:

Data collection will regard:
.average daily gains (at different stages),
.survival rates (at different stages),
.and rate of normal progeny.

A sire model will be used to estimate genetic proofs of each sire and to compare the genetic differences among the males from different origins (SMEs) and populations (Norway and Italy).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
