LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF CERAMICS CONTAINING TRU WASTE (PART 2)

Objective

THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH WORK IS TO CONTINUE AND COMPLETE THE STUDIES STARTED UNDER PART 1 OF THE PROJECT (CONTRACT FI1W-0098):
1)CONTINUATION OF LEACHING STUDIES;
2) X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETRY: DETERMINATION OF THE PHASE COMPOSITION AND METAMORPHIC TRANSITION OF THE CRYSTALLINE PHASES. GLASS SAMPLES: DEVITRIFICATION AND CRYSTALLIZATION PROCESSES;
3) LIGHT MICROSCOPY: DETERMINATION OF STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS (GRAIN SIZE, GRAIN DISTRIBUTION, GRAIN ORIENTATION IN THE MATRIX AND WASTE PHASES, PORE SPACES, FISSURES, NEW MINERAL FORMATIONS. GLASS SAMPLES: HOMOGENEITY, NEW MINERAL FORMATIONS, FORMATIONS OF PORES AND FISSURES;
4) SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY: DETERMINATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHARACTERISTIC WASTE AND MATRIX ELEMENTS. SURFACE STUDIES, IN PARTICULAR OF LEACHED SAMPLES, E.G. LEACHING LAYERS.
5) ALPHA AND BETA-GAMMA AUTORADIOGRAPHY: DETERMINATION OF DISTRIBUTION OF ACTIVITY AND DETECTION OF CHANGES.
6) SEMI-AUTOMATIC IMAGE ANALYSIS: QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF CHARACTERISTIC STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS, E.G. PORE SIZE AND STRUCTURE, FISSURES, DISTRIBUTION AND ORIENTATION OF MATRIX AND WASTE PHASES.
7) DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS: DETERMINATION OF THE DEGREE OF ENERGY STORAGE.

THE STUDIES CARRIED OUT HITHERTO ON CERAMICS CONTAINING TRU WASTE ENABLE ONLY VERY LIMITED CONCLUSIONS TO BE DRAWN AS TO LONG-TERM STABILITY ON THE BASIS OF THE HIGH HALF-VALUE TIMES OF THE TRU ELEMENTS AND THEIR RADIOTOXICITY.

IT IS THEREFORE PLANNED TO CARRY OUT SPECIFIC EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES THAT MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO EXTRAPOLATE THE POSSIBLE CHANGES IN THE PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS OF CERAMICS CONTAINING TRU WASTE AS A FUNCTION OF THE TOTAL ALPHA DOSE AND STORAGE TIME, ETC. UNDER BOTH NORMAL AND INCIDENT CONDITIONS. THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CERAMIC TRU WASTE PRODUCTS CHANGE AS A FUNCTION OF STORAGE TIME AND THE ALPHA DOSE ARE TO BE DETERMINED.

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF CERAMIC TRU WASTE PRODUCTS, IN PARTICULAR OF THE LEACHING MECHANISMS AND METAMICTIZATION OF THE CRYSTALLINE PHASES, CAN BE USED TO MAKE A REALISTIC ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY OF THE ULTIMATE DISPOSAL OF TRU WASTE IN SALT FORMATIONS.
