Objective THE EXPERIMENT WILL SERVE TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE INSTALLATION SCENARIO ALREADY TESTED ON A MOCK-UP OF A SINGLE CONTAINER OF VITRIFIED WASTE, CAN BE EXTRAPOLATED TO SOME TWENTY OR SO GLASS CONTAINERS. THIS DEMONSTRATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE GRANITE FORMATION AT FANAY-AUGERES. AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION SHAFTS HAVE BEEN CHARACTERISED AND CONSTRUCTED ON A 1/1 SCALE AT THE FANAY MINE, SIMULATED CONTAINERS OF VITRIFIED WASTE WILL BE PLACED IN THESE SHAFTS ALONG WITH THE BACKFILLING MATERIAL (PRESELECTED FULLER'S EARTH). THE TECHNOLOGY FOR SETTING UP THE ENGINEERED BARRIER WILL BE BASED ON THE LOWERING OF BASKETS CONTAINING TRIANGULAR PIECES OF CLAY.
