PRACTICE OF TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTES ARISING OUTSIDE THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

Objective

IT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW ON THE CLASSIFICATION, TREATMENT AND, WHERE APPROPRIATE, THE EXEMPTION FROM REGULATORY CONTROL OF RADIOACTIVE WASTES ARISING OUTSIDE THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE. THE INVESTIGATIONS IS BASED ON AN EXEMPLARY EVALUATION OF THE CURRENT SITUATION.
The handling of radioactive wastes, which are not produced in facilities using the nuclear fuel cycle, has been studied. The actual amounts of radioactive waste are given as well as the fractions coming from institutions under consideration with respect to the total amount. For different areas, such as institutions producing radioactive waste, plants conditioning the waste, storage facilities or the planned final repository, the practice of handling, conditioning or storing is described and different methods are discussed. As far as is possible and reasonable recommendations are given.
1. ANALYSIS OF WASTE STREAMS FOR MAIN SOURCES, ACTIVITIES AND AMOUNTS

2. INVESTIGATION OF THE ORGANISATION OF WASTE COLLECTION AND TREATMENT, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS:

- CRITERIA FOR CLASSIFICATION
- LICENSING SITUATION
- KIND OF MEASUREMENT
- ORGANISATION OF RESPONSABILITIES
- AVAILABLE CONDITIONING PROCEDURES IN PLACE

3. EVALUATION OF RESULTS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR IMPROVEMENTS
