REVIEW OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE ASSAYING METHODS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE AND STUDY OF AN OPTIMIZED MOBILE NON-DESTRUCTIVE ASSAYING SYSTEM

Objective

THIS PROGRAMME IS PART OF A JOINT PROPOSAL WITH CEA CADARACHE AND SGN PARIS. IT IS AIMED AT REVIEWING THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY FOR NDA TECHNIQUES AS APPLIED TO SOLID WASTE MEASUREMENT. IT WILL REVIEW CURRENT RADIOACTIVE WASTE ARISINGS WITHIN THE EEC AND WILL RELATE THIS TO THE RELEVANT DISPOSAL OR STORAGE REGULATIONS. AN APPRAISAL WILL BE MADE OF THE MEASUREMENT CAPABILITY OF THE VARIOUS NDA TECHNIQUES; THIS WILL INCLUDE INFORMATION ON THE APPLICATION OF A MOBILE UNIT AND THE MODELLING AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK REQUIRED.

THE DOUNREAY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PROGRAMME WILL BE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

(I) REVIEW OF CURRENT POSITION IN UK CONCERNING REGULATIONS, WASTE ARISINGS, MAJOR TYPES OF WASTE, DEGREE OF SEGREGATION ACHIEVED, EXISTING NDA SYSTEMS. THIS WILL INCLUDE AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON DISPOSAL AT DRIGG.

(II) PROPOSED NDA SYSTEMS FOR FUTURE ARISINGS AND THE USE OF MATHEMATICAL MODELLING TO OPTIMISE SELECTION AND DESIGN.

(III)DETECTION LIMITS ACHIEVABLE UNDER OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS.

(IV) IDENTIFY AREAS WHERE NO SUITABLE NDA TECHNIQUE IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.

(V) CONSIDER THE APPLICATION OF A MOBILE NDA UNIT FOR SOME WASTE STREAMS.

THE REVIEW OF WASTE ARISINGS WILL INCLUDE INFORMATION ON THE WASTE MATRIX, DENSITY AND ASSOCIATED GAMMA EMITTERS. THE DEGREE OF SEGREGATION ACHIEVED WILL BE ESTABLISHED AND THE EFFECTS WHICH THIS WILL HAVE ON THE OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF THE NDA SYSTEMS.

OPTIMISED MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY WILL BE IDENTIFIED AND THE USE OF MATHEMATICAL MODELLING TO ACHIEVE THIS. WHERE NO SUITABLE TECHNIQUE IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE DEVELOPMENT WORK WILL BE DEFINED.

THE APPLICATION OF A MOBILE UNIT WILL BE CONSIDERED PARTICULARLY IN FACILITIES WHERE A DEDICATED SYSTEM IS NOT JUSTIFIED OR WHERE THE SKILLS TO OPERATE NDA SYSTEMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. THE USE OF A MULTIPLE TECHNIQUE APPROACH IN ONE DETECTION ARRANGEMENT WILL BE PART OF THIS.

A PRELIMINARY PROJECT STUDY WILL BE CARRIED OUT WHICH WILL DEFINE THE FUNDAMENTAL PARAMETERS FOR A MOBILE UNIT WHICH COULD BE USED IN VARIOUS EEC COUNTRIES.
