DETERMINATION AND CONTROL OF ACTIVITY IN RADIOACTIVE WASTE

Objective

KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOTAL ACTIVITY AND THE CONCENTRATION OF INDIVIDUAL NUCLIDES IN UNTREATED WASTE AND ABOVE ALL IN THE WASTE PRODUCT IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE CONTROL OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE PRODUCTS IN ORDER TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE CODES AND REGULATIONS.

ON THE BASIS OF EXPERIENCE GAINED IN VARIOUS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS,CONTROL OF THE ACTIVITY INVENTORY OF THE SIX WASTE PRODUCT GROUPS DEFINED ACCORDING TO THE PREVISIONAL ULTIMATE STORAGE REQUIREMENTS SHOULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES:

-NONDESTUCTIVE DETERMINATION OF ACTINIDE CONTENT IN WASTE THROUGH ACTIVE AND/OR PASSIVE NEUTRON MEASUREMENT,
-FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIONUCLIDES WHICH CANNOT BE DIRECTLY MEASURED,METHODS ENABLING FAST CHEMICAL SEPARATION AND CONVERSION TO FORMS SUITABLE METHODS MUST BE DEVELOPED FOR EACH OF THE SIX WASTE PRODUCT GROUPS.PROBLEMATICAL RADIONUCLIDES INCLUDE,E.G.,14C,36CL,129I,55FE,59NI,63NI,90SR,99TC,210PB,226RA AND 288RA.

THE MAIN RESEARCH EFFORT IS DEVOTED TO THE OPTIMISATION OF ACTIVE AND/OR PASSIVE MEASUREMENT OF NEUTRON-EMISSION FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF WASTE PRODUCT TO CONTROL THE ACTIVITY INVENTORY IN COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE CODES AND REGULATIONS.
THE WORK TO BE COVERED WILL INCLUDE A LITERATURE STUDY OF NEUTRON EMISSION MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AS WELL AS METHODS OF DISSOLUTION AND DECOMPOSITION OF WASTE GROUPS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ALONG WITH SELECTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES TO SEPARATE THE RADIONUCLIDES FOR RADIATION MEASUREMENTS.THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF EQUIPMENT TO ASCERTAIN THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE METHOD BY EXAMINING THE EFFECT OF POSSIBLE DISTURBING INFLUENCES SUCH AS THE MODERATING EFFECT OF MATRIX MATERIALS AND HIGH NEUTRON CROSS SECTIONS CAUSED BY ELEMENTS BOTH IN THE WASTE AND IN THE WASTE MATRIX.
