Exploitable results
Research is being carried out in order to assess the radiation tolerance of sensors and other sensitive components to be used on a remote handling unit under a severe radioactive environment. This includes electrical sensors for distance, force and vibration sensing, motors and resolvers, optical fibres for communication and sensing (strain, temperature, dosimetry), as well as electronic and optoelectronic circuits.
The tests involve upgrading commercially available components and systems and assessments in representative conditions in gamma and neutron irradiation facilities up to very high radiation doses.
A database is being maintained with the results obtained.
