Objective
The project will investigate systematic and random errors associated with the A-bomb dosimetry, and assess their impact on cancer risk estimates. Fast neutron fluences in Hiroshima will be determined retrospectively by extremely sensitive accelerator mass spectrometry, to reassess neutron doses of the A-bomb survivors (LSS cohort), and resolve thereby the' neutron discrepancy' in Hiroshima, which is currently one of the major sources of uncertainty in the derivation of risk coefficients. The results will, together with updated information on y-ray dosimetry, serve as the basis for an appraisal of the impact of dosimetric changes and dosimetric random errors on risk coefficients for y-rays and neutrons and on their Lincertainties. Sources of uncertainty in the LSS other than systematic errors in Hiroshima neutron dose estimates, such as different types of random errors in dose estimates, and modelling uncertainties associated with projecting risks to low doses and over time, will be assessed. Consequent uncertainties in the cancer risk estimates derived from the LSS will be quantified in terms of different carcinogenesis models (empirical and mechanistic).

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
