Oxide fuels: microstructure and composition variations

Objective

This project will study and model the influence of microstructure and matrix composition on oxide fuel behaviour in normal LWR operating conditions. The emphasis will lie on temperature and fission gas release which will be both monitored on-line.
A matrix of six instrumented fuel rod segments will be irradiated under representative PWR conditions. The test matrix consists of three different fuel compositions (UO[2], (U, Pu)O[2] and (Th, Pu)O[2]), each with two microstructures (homogeneous and fine dispersed ceramic-in-ceramic). The experiment will provide unique information about the separate effects of chemical composition and microstructure on fission gas release.
Extensive theoretical work will be performed to incorporate the different fuel types in existing thermo-mechanical codes and the experimental results of the in-pile and out-of-pile measurements will serve as the basis for code benchmarking and model development.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
