A perspective on computerized severe accident management operator support

Objective

To investigate the possibility of a computerized operator support tool("comptool") during a severe accident at a NPP to further enhance the existing tools, notably the in the EU widely used Westingh. Owners Group (WOG) Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMG), by making use of the CAMS system developed in the OECD Halden Reacter Program and Comb. Engineering logic diagrams. The comptool should support and enhance the WOG-SAMG tools (decision diagrams, computational aids) by validating available signals from I&C, track missing information, update pre-calculated decision points in the SAMG scheme, indicate potential success paths, keep track of actions performed, generate insights in the plant damage states, estimate the time to major events with due consideration of uncertainties, prioritise system restoration, estimate source terms for off-site actions. The comptool should support and facilitate the difficult decision making in the stressful environment of a severe accident.

Many nuclear power plants have implemented guidelines to prevent and mitigate the consequences of severe accidents (SAMG). These guidelines contain a number of high level actions, to be initiated upon symptoms of core damage. It is anticipated that information available may be unreliable as instruments maybe damaged or beyond their design range. The proposed project investigates the possibility to improve insights and the actions taken by computerized support. This support should enhance the existing paper tools (a/o actualise decision diagrams, computational aids), validate available signals, identify success paths, estimate the plant damage state, keep track of actions performed, indicate the time to major events ahead (with due consideration to uncertainties), estimate source terms. The project is primarily based on the Westinghouse SAMG and the CAMS operator support tool.
