Assessment of Computational Fluid Dynamics Codes for Heavy Liquid Metals

Objective

The use of Heavy Liquid Metals (HLM) is rapidly diffusing in different research and industrial fields. The detailed knowledge of the basic thermal hydraulic phenomena associated with their use is a necessary step for the development of tools used in the engineering of HLM components. This is particularly true in the case of high power particle beam targets, where the use of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) tools for the design is mandatory. The experience in Heavy Liquid Metals (HLM) thermal fluid dynamics in both experimental and numerical fields is at present limited and somehow dispersed. This is especially true when considering turbulent exchange phenomena, free surface and two-phase flows. On the other hand, the use of HLM is rapidly diffusing in different research and industrial projects. The present accompanying measure is aimed at joining experiences in the field of HLM in the experimental and numerical fields, in order to have a clear picture of the state of the art and to define the R&D and the modelling activity needed. Where possible, the assessment will be made on the basis of existing experiments whose physical phenomena will be analysed through the execution of calculation benchmarks using selected commercial and research codes. This activity should conclude with a final assessment of the main shortcomings and a proposal of future research activities.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
