Objective
Four large scale facilities QUENCH, LIVE, DISCO-H, and COMET are offered to partners from EU member countries and associated states. The QUENCH, DISCO-H and COMET facilities are already operating and have a high reputation in the Community. Their overall purpose is to investigate core melt scenarios from the beginning of core degradation to melt relocation in the vessel, possible melt dispersion to the cavity and MCCI and cool ability of the melt in the cavity. The LIVE facility will be the junction between the other facilities and will investigate melt formation and relocation to the lower head and melt retention in the reactor pressure vessel. The operation of LIVE will start mid 2002. In all experiments, stimulant materials with properties chosen to be as close to the real core material as possible are used to investigate the behaviour of the core material.
