Higgs boson search and detailed study of four fermion background using the delphi detector at Lep 5

Objective

The host team of the DAPNIA/SPP is part of a European collaboration in particles physics, called DELPHI from the name of the particle detector handled by the collaboration at the LEP collider at CERN (Centre Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire). LEP provides collisions between electrons positrons that produce the Z boson, which is the particle responsible for the neutral weak interaction. The Z data sample recorded at LEP is already the largest in the world, which allows to make a very precise study of the Z properties that translates into precise tests of the weak interaction theory.
The project aims at studying the production of Higgs boson in the Z decays. The Higgs boson is a particle predicted by the theory as the remnant of the process which gave masses both to the particles responsible for the weak interaction and to the matter constituents. Looking for the Higgs boson is theferore one major subject of today particle physics. The proposed project will focus on a detailed study of the backgound present in this search. A correct background understanding and estimate is indeed essential to extract a reliable signal. The data sample available at the end of 1995 should allow such a study of the four fermion process which is one of the main background sources, yet not fully understood. The results will be included in a review paper on the Higgs search in DELPHI at LEP phase 1.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
