Evolutionary processes inferred from molecular diversity. Implications for conservation biology and fishery management

Objective

Small pelagic fish are of much economic importance and are known to be subject to population crashes. Whether fishing pressure is responsible for the collapses is still unresolved. However, these collapses seem to be characteristic of clupeoids.
Analysis of both the relationsl ips between populations and their histories using molecular data has proved useful and original. However, in classical approaches, population sizes are usually held constant through time. Theoretical and statistical properties of population size variations have, in the past, been poorly studied.
Recently, a great deal of work has focused on the specific signatures of past and recent demographic events (expansions, bottlenecks) on the molecular genetic structure of a species.
We propose to apply new statistical analyses developed in human population genetics to Sardinella aurita, a pelagic fish of great economic importance in West Africa. We also propose to develop simulations that could help understand the risks of extinction under various scenarios.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
