Nonlinear magneto-optical studies of thin magnetic films

Objective

We propose to study the properties of magnetic (multilayer) films using the recently discovered technique of Magnetisation-induced Second-Harmonic Generation (MSHG). This nonlinear Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) is not only interface specific but is 10 3 times larger compared to its linear counterpart.
Magnetic multilayers show exciting new properties like Giant Magneto Resistance and Quantum Well States, which have a large potential for practical applications. The interfaces between the various metallic films play an important role in these systems. Unfortunately, the buried interfaces are experimentally very difficult to investigate by standard magnetic probes. By comparing both the nonlinear (interface) and lin- ear (bulk) MOKE signals, one shall be able to discriminate between bulk and interface contributions to the magnetic properties of the thin multilayer films. We want to particularly investigate the (Magnetic) Quantum Well States as recent experiments have shown that MSHG is an extremely effective technique for this purpose.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
