Objective
The main objective of the research project is to investigate the potential of in-fibre Bragg grating (IFBG) strain sensors for health and usage monitoring of aerospace structures. The content of the research project is summarized below: i) Fabrication of in-fibre Bragg gratings using tuneable UV pulsed laser source.
ii) Development of a signal processing technique to measure the strain and temperature induced change of the reflected wavelength.
iii) Characterization of strain and temperature performance of gratings manufactured in (i) using the method developed in (ii)
iv) Investigation of a novel technique to separate the temperature and strain response of the IFBG's
v) Embedding of the IFBG's into composite materials and evaluation of the techniques developed in (iii) to measure strain using mechanical test machines. In addition to evaluate the temperature-strain separation technique under embedded conditions.
The results expected form this research project will enable an assessment of the performance of in-fibre Bragg gratings as embedded strain sensors for composite structural health and usage monitoring with the major issue of temperature-strain cross-sensitivity investigated.
The project will allow me to obtain training at an advanced level in the interdisciplinary high technology subject areas relevant to future industrial requirements.
