Objective
As an HCM fellow, at University of Uppsala, I trained on asymmetric synthesis of amino acids labelled with stable isotopes, such as 13C, 15N, 2H. These labelling methods consist a new and important tool in NMR structural studies of labelled peptides, to gain information about conformation and microstructure. I applied for a return home fellowship to continue this work with the synthesis of model peptides labelled with stable isotopes, primarily for NMR studies.
Right after my return to Greece, I plan to set up a research lab at Department of Chemistry, University of Ioannina, and to teach the techniques of asymmetric synthesis and labelling of amino acids to graduate students, which will decide to join the project. These methods are absolutely new in Greece and we will collaborate with the research group of Prof. C. Sakarellos. Next step will be incorporation of these labelled amino acids into simple model peptides, which will be studied by NMR.
