Social representations, identity processes and collective action in old people

Objectif

Given the considerable increase in the proportion of the population in Europe who are over 65 years old and that, due to scientific and technological developments, people are likely to live longer, and remain healthy and potentially active members of the community for some time after retirement, this research aims to examine the processes involved in the political participation of elderly people in the local, national and European level.
It uses social representations and identity processes theories and adopts a range of qualitative and quantitative methods to
1 design of a valid and reliable instrument to measure the level and type of political involvement amongst the elderly
2 study which of the curr social issues relating either to specific policies on ageing or to wider social concerns old people are likely to respond to by taking collective action
3 examine the types of collective action elderly people are likel to take, and
4 determine the factors which are likely to influence their choice of action.
