Characterization of metal alloys with non-dendritic structures produced via semi solid processing

Objective

The objective of this project is to test the static and dynamic mechanical properties of alloys, primarily of aluminium, produced with a non-dendritic structure via a semi-solid metal processing route. Currently an experimental rig is under development at the host institution which will enable a range of non-dendritic structures to be produced in the test alloy, in a controlled manner.
The dendritic structure of the alloy will be fragmented by shear of the material when it is in its semi-solid state. The applicant, on a return grant, will assist with the control of the experimental process, subsequently assess the mechanical properties (tensile, fracture toughness and fatigue resistance) of test samples, and investigate the mechanisms of deformation. Thus the shear conditions for optimum final microstructure will be determined. It is envisaged that alloys with superior mechanical properties to conventional dendritic alloys will be manufactured, with associated economic and environmental benefits.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
