Objective
I will work with the heavy ion group at LIP, Lisbon, on the NA50 experiment, which studies dimuons produced by ultrarelativistic Pb beam at the CERN-SPS. Several dimuons signals are relevant to the phase transition from ordinary matter to the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). I will design, test and integrate in the NA50 set-up a D-D identifier, based on a fine-grained Si detector, with the aim of reaching a better understanding of an intriguing excess found at invariant masses around 1.5-2 GeV/c. As an introduction, I will analyse the complete dimuon mass spectrum measured and compare it with expectations on the basis of previous experiments.
Finally, I will be involved in a broader study of new physics which becomes possible if QGP is formed in the extended hot blobs of matters produced in central Pb-Pb collisions.
