Duality in string and gauge theories

Objective

The present research work will be centered in the topic of duality symmetries in the context of string and gauge theories.
In string theories we will study the formulation of non-abelian duality as a canonical transformation. This formulation is already known for some particular examples and it allows to prove that non-abelian duality is a symmetry of string perturbation theory and that it is invertible. In this formulation we expect to be able to study as well mirror symmetry and provide some unified description of both symmetries.
In gauge theories we will focus in developing a systematic way of constructing S-duals in non-abelian gauge theories. We expect that we will be able to generalize the canonical transformation responsible for S-duality in abelian gauge theories to N = 4 and certain N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories.
Finally we will study string-string duality. Once we will have a description of S-duality in terms of canonical transformations it will be very interesting to try to unify T-duality and S-duality for the string theories that have both symmetries.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
