The response and control of semiconductor laser arrays under optical feedback

Objective

(a) To develop a consistent and rigourous theory to describe the dynamical response of semiconductor laser arrays with feedback. This theory should apply to high power and surface emitting laser, multimode systems and large bandwidth systems. (b) To analyse recent experimental results (i.e. spatial mode selection, phase locking, feedback instabilities, coherence collapse) in terms of these new theoretical models. (c) To verify the predictions of point (a) in a careful designed experiment on vertical cavity surface emitting laser arrays. (d) To apply new mathematical tools learned from nonlinear dynamical system theory, high performance computation and simulation to determine feasible feedback schemes to control the coherence of the laser array device. (e) To experimentally measure the spectral linewidth properties of semi- conductor laser arrays for different levels of potical feedback. (f) To establish a new interdisciplinary group of international researchers capable of modeling, building and testing novel configurations for semiconductor laser arrays. The key being here the determination of the feedback scheme required to produce line narrowing of the device and phase locked operation. (g) To provide high quality research and technical training for experimental and theoretical laser physicists with an emphasis on semiconductor optoelectronics.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
