Decoherence and quantum error correcting codes

Objective

The proposed aim of my research project in Oxford is to carry out a comprehensive feasibility study of practical implementation of quantum computation and to identify the most promising technologies for building quantum logic gates and quantum processors.
I want to concentrate my research on the following topics:
1) a detailed investigation of quantum decoherence in quantum data processing systems at the level of quantum logic gates and simple quantum networks, using both the master equation approach and Monte Carlo methods to simulate the behaviour of quantum logic gates and networks. 2) a thorough analysis of the feasibility of implementing some self-establishing algorithms i.e. quantum error correcting schemes, in order to overcome the undesired effects of decoherence in quantum computation.
By studying both decoherence and the possibility of implementing error correction in different technologies, I hope to be able to indicate the most promising technologies for quantum data processing.
