Representation of space in the primate hippocampus

Objective

In recent years the idea that the hippocampal formation is crucial for the formation of some types of memory has been established. Within the scope of the role of hippocampus in spatial memory, many experiments have been developed on freely moving rats. For the first time, an experimental set-up allowing single cell recording in a freely moving monkey has been developed. Monkeys are useful in providing a model closer to the human hippocampus than rats.
In this situation, in one monkey, no "place" cells have so far been found. Instead, we have found a considerable population of "view" cells. These hippocampal neurons respond to a view of space 'out there', not to the place where the monkey is. This is helpful in understanding hippocampal function in humans.
The grant would allow me to receive full training in the sophisticated techniques used and to extend the results to simultaneously recorded single neurons.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
