Fluid-dynamic modelling as a tool for the study of hydrogeological- geochemical relationships in peculiar cases

Objective

Research objectives and content
The proposal will concern some natural hydrosystems and will provide complementary hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical studies as well as fluid-dynamic modelling of environmental, seismic and volcanic activities. In a context of a multidisciplinary research at the host laboratory, the purpose is to develop sets of empirical (inductive) and theoretical (deductive) models in order lo infer migration mechanisms of the underground fluids in the appropriate upper parts of the crust. By logically connecting these two sets of models a tool for the surveillance and forecast of the involved hydrosystems is expected to be defined: for example the monitoring and anticipation of the behaviour of polluted and/or over-exploited aquifers, the identification of precursory signals of natural catastrophic events such as increase of seismic and/or volcanic activity.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project will contribute to the applicant's skills (1) by gaining from the general expertise of the host institute in the scientific domain involved, (2) by benefiting from knowledge of the workings of the laboratories and equipment, specially ICP Mass Spectrometer and radon monitoring.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
One company, "Comision Federal de Electricidad" in Mexico, will support the project with its research laboratory in the study of one of the involved hydrosystems.
