Research objectives and content
The aim of this proposal is to study four related metal/ metal oxide systems ( i.e. Au/TiO2 Au/CeO2, Pd/TiO2, Pd/CeO2) especially with respect to the properties of the interface between the two phases, which plays a crucial role in determining catalytic performance. The complexity of these technologically important biphasic systems is such that no single approach or experimental technique can provide all the requiered information. The object of the present proposal is to correlate information obtained with model catalysts based on single crystals (e.g. TiO2/Au(lll)) with that obtained using the corresponding practical dispersed catalysts, an approach whose success has already been demonstrated by the Cambridge laboratory. This proposal builds on the applicant's present Cambridge work programme, already started under a one-year Spanish Grant. His current work already plays a crucial part in developing the recently approved joint project (British Council/Acciones Integradas) between Dr. Richard Lambert's laboratory in Cambridge (Host Institution) and Prof. G. Munuera's laboratory in Sevilla (applicant's previous group) Under the project proposed here, the Cambridge group (and therefore the applicant) will focus on the behaviour of model systems whose structural and reactive will be correlated with the corresponding practical catalysts. These latter will be the focus of the Seville group's work which lies in precisely the area of the applicant's PhD research: therefore we have excellent coordination and continuity between the two centres.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
An important aspect of the project is the ability to perform analogous spectroscopic and kinetic studies on the model systems and on the real catalysts, both in Cambridge and Seville. This approach will result in optimum training for the candidate in new techniques (STM, HREM, LEED, ISS). These Cambridge-acquired skills will in due course be transferred to Sevilla where they should be of considerable value because the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Sevilla will shortly be acquiring the very same advanced techniques. This important benefit arises because the applicant will return to Sevilla after completing his training and research in Cambridge

The catalytic chemistry of oxide supported metals is of major importance with respect to large scale industrial production, environmental protection and sensor technology. The catalytic systems to be studied find application in a wide range of processes including pollution abatement, hydrocarbon conversion, and in the synthesis of commodity and speciality chemicals. In connection with these areas of application, the Cambridge laboratory has very good industrial links with British Petroleum (UK), Shell (Netherlands), British Gas (UK), Johnson Matthey (UK) and ICI Katalco (UK).
