Kondo effect in systems of reduced dimensionality

Objective

Research objectives and content
Kondo impurities strongly affect many mesoscopic phenomena. In recent experiments it has been shown that properties of the impurities themselves change in restricted geometries. In this project a theoretical study of the Kondo effect in a disorderd metal of finite size is planned. In the first part of the project, effects of finite system size will be investigated starting from high temperature perturbation theory. In the next step, investigations at low temperatures, i.e. temperatures of the order of the Kondo temperature and below, will be carried out. Of special interest is the situation where typical mesoscopic energy scales, e.g. the Thouless energy, are comparable to the typical energy scale for the magnetic moment, i.e. the Kondo temperature. The objective is to understand a specific model of interacting electrons in a disordered system, and to clarify the relevance of magnetic impurities for mesoscopic phenomena like the persistent current in normal metals.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Within the planned project, I will benefit from the large experience of the Rome group in the theoretical description of mesoscopic systems, disorder, and strongly correlated electrons. My research visit in Prof. Castellani's group will intensify the existing contacts between the Rome and Augsburg group.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
