Comparing stochastic linear oscillations and deterministic non-linear oscillations in ecological time-series

Research objectives and content
Microtine density cycles have usually been modelled in two different ways: The first is the theoretical/mathematical approach, which is based on assumed mechanisms, often being non-linear. It starts from the ecological hypotheses about the world and yield predictions of what is expected to happen under different conditions (i.e. under different parameter values). The main problem with this approach is that it is very difficult to derive this type of models directly from the observations. The second is the empirical/statistical approach. This approach starts from observations and tries to provide a good statistical description of the data. This approach is difficult to relate to data/knowledge on ecological processes.
These two approaches to the modelling of ecological processes have tended to develop more or less in isolation with only superficial reference to each other - and consequently without gaining much from each other. This lack of interaction is unfortunate, because such lack has lessened the maximal possible development and achievements in the field of population ecology. The major aim of this project is to compare and unify these two approaches and test the appropriateness of the approaches.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
During the period at the University of Oslo, I shall benefit by expanding my approach significantly. I shall take part in detailed ecological discussions, on patterns as well as mechanisms, which will make me a better biomathematician. I have planned to bridge the gap between traditional mathematical modelling of ecological processes and the statistical modelling of time-series. This will be done by deducing the structure as written in delay co-ordinates of various mathematical models formulated as differential and difference equations - which only very seldom is done. These models will be compared to statistically derived delay co-ordinate models. Such training is particularly important today, with many unsolved environmental problems, perhaps not directly linked to microtine rodent cycles.
